I can barely survive flying across the pond, but 20 year old me might have wanted to sail with the gang.

The cake you are eating is called "Bolo Rei" (King`s Cake) tipcal during X-Mas. You can buy it also during the year in some portuguese shops – also outside Portugal. Bom apetite!

Well captured ! Love the comparison of travel today with the 15th century.

I’ve been to Luanda a few times. It’s a fascinating place. However, incredibly expensive! (A Protea, for example, in Angola is 3X the price of one in SA )

one thing you forgot to mention: we did all that with a hundred men! even the rangers came to learn from us! the result is now are selling it bit by bit for a couple of bucks to any entitled fool, plus passport after naturalization. that's our mistake, and we own our mistakes. but i rather have immigrants that contribute with skills and work than old retires who do nothing but enjoy what our ancestors built and suck us even more dry. those should stay as tourists. sorry for the rant of blunt honesty. i'm all for clarity in comunication. sensibilities don't concern me, i'm 60, f*** that.

Hi Nick! I absolutely loved this! Putting the present in perspective with the past is something we all need to be reminded of and in many cases, learn from and appreciate…..e.g., De Gama's 3 months on rough, uncertain waters vs your 7 hr. comfy flight 🙂 …in the late 1800s, my grandparents journeyed from Italy to New York in steerage in stuffy, uncomfortable quarters and yet they all had hope and optimism which is fed from the feelings of discovery, and in many cases, also need. The contrast you included of images from the 1500s to now added to the realism. Thank you, and I'm looking forward to more of this series. Portugal's history contributed so much to the world. Best, M
