Search and rescue efforts are said to be underway after a small plane crashed just off the shore of the Turks and Caicos islands today.

Authorities in Turks and Caicos say they received a report around midday that an aircraft had landed on water approximately 10 miles from Northwest Point, Providenciales.

The plane, which departed from the United States, is believed to have experienced engine failure.

Two individuals were reportedly on board but their current status is unknown.

Local and international rescue teams continue efforts to locate them.
