I can 100% agree with one point about Durov – his shady cooperation with dictatorships does not look good at all.
When he was forced to sell VK and left Russia in 2013, and when in 2016 refused to provide a backdoor for secret police, he became an icon of freedom of speech and standing against the dictatorship. In our country people were shot or fall out of the windows for lesser "sins".
But look what's happening now, Telegram is not just allowed in Russia again, but Pavel's brother Nickolay (who was second figure in Telegram until his involvement in personal scandal in 2017) returned to Russia without any problems, and no one knows what he's doing there.
For me it means only one – Telegram is not as safe as Signal or Protonmail, because they are banned by our regime, and this is much better proof of their stand for freedom, rather than PR move with Durov's refusal to cooperate with it that happened 8 years ago. -

Wouldn't the first point count against signal as well? If someone was spreading CSAM on signal, they wouldn't even decline to share info with law enforcement since they wouldn't have stored identifying info in the first place, right?

I think there is a shocking amount of pdf's in this comments section. CSM/CSA, or the lack of protection or safeguarding in this department, will forever haunt the privacy community. It shows true colours when genuine protection of children, with due legal process is chosen second after privacy. It shows who they are and what they want to keep hidden.

No goverment or polititian would sincerly care about such crime (unfortunatly). Alegedly, Macron himself lured him to France by calling him personaly, and promiaing safety. You do not do that unless you are dldesperate, and French are known to be very soft on sexual musconduct.
This is almost certain because of Russian military sucessfuly using it on battlefield while French Foregine legion is were targeted and destroyed in Ukraine several days before arrest. -

Wait… safety loses a point, because they don't take down 'objectionable' matter and cooperate with governments?? Who gets to decide what's 'objectionable'? What happens when Mississippi wants claims that Earth is more than 6000 years old taken down, and those who promote such un-Godly claims investigated, their privacy invaded, and their doxing and imprisonment diligently pursued at any cost, because such blasphemous claims will harm their children? Wouldn't the same claims being used here have been applied to homosexuals in the 50s and 60s? The 'yeah, but this is different' belief reflects how well we have all been indoctrinated to hate certain groups. Do these governments, so intent on 'protecting' children from online alleged predators, have any effs left to give for children who are starving in various parts of the world? How about when tons and tons of weapons are being sold or given to a government that is actively bombing children in tents, blocking aid, and intentionally aiming to destroy a populace made up in great part by children? This is gaslighting at its finest, and the sheep swallow it hole, and vehemently defend this approach, while giving nary a whiff for the children they are actually CONTRIBUTING to destroying. But, yeah… that's different. Sorry, but no. It is NOT. Almost all of us have drunk the Kool-Aid, falling for the "look over here" approach governments have so effectively employed to obtain our consent to horrific crimes. Those who back governments fighting this horrible plague of C-Stoff that clearly must be affecting millions of poor, innocent children around the world to a degree that they are not only willing, but insistent upon their governments fighting this scourge by whatever means necessary are not thinking for themselves, no matter how much they try to pat themselves on their backs for their 'humanitarian' concerns.

end to end encryption is a valid point, there might also be things they can improve. However, I see protecting user privacy (regardless of what they do) as a plus. Someone will use a knife to harm somebody, it doesn't mean we should blame the knife manufacturers.
