Caribbean culture put on display at Alabama festival

BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — Caribbean culture was on full display in Bessemer on Saturday.

A record 68 vendors were at the Marvel City Caribbean Food and Music Festival. They offered items like jerk chicken and Caribbean souvenirs. The festival is put on by the Central Alabama Caribbean American Association.

According to organizers of the event, they hope to spread awareness about the influence Caribbean culture has on the U.S.

“This culture is a part of your everyday, it’s in the music you hear on the radio, it’s on your television screen, and it’s in the palm of your hand now that social media is so prevalent,” said Ulato Sam, the master of ceremonies at the festival. “The beauty of that is if we can find a way to come together and celebrate intersectionality, a state like Alabama can start to be a forerunner in what it means to have this conversation seeing as there is such a rich history of collaboration here that should be celebrated.”

The Central Alabama Caribbean American Association has events all year aiming to promote Caribbean culture. A calendar of events and ways to get involved can be found by clicking here.
