Cartagena – Old City Walk

During a visit to Cartagena, Colombia, we are transported to a charming world where the past and present blend harmoniously. Starting with the Old City, the walled historic center of Cartagena, we are greeted by a labyrinth of winding streets, lined with Spanish colonial architecture and colorful buildings that tell ancient stories. This site is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and offers a vibrant atmosphere, with local bars and restaurants inviting you to taste traditional cuisine.

As you stroll through the streets, you will inevitably encounter the impressive Murallas de Cartagena. Considered by many as the most impressive urban walls in the world, these fortifications began to be built after an attack led by Sir Francis Drake at the end of the 16th century.

Next, we visited the Sanctuary of San Pedro Claver, dedicated to the patron saint of slaves. This sacred site offers a peaceful and contemplative break, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets.

There is still time for a visit to the Historical Museum of Cartagena, which revealed a darker side of the city's history. Behind a charming colonial façade, this palace houses a fascinating collection of torture instruments used during the Spanish Inquisition, as well as pre-Columbian, colonial, and independence-era art.

Finally, a stop at the Cartagena Cathedral is essential. This imposing structure, one of the largest in the city's series of fortifications, features a massive façade and a simple and serene interior.
