I lived with a cheating husband for 40 years, he controlled my life and I couldn’t get out of my marriage, until I lost both my parents and had inherited enough money to divorce him. I lost everything and now live with my son in his house. I don’t have much money but I’m happier than I ever was in that controlling marriage.
Money and a big house holiday home isn’t worth it.

There are lots of flaws in the legal side of this story. No way would he have to pay for the kids college on his own, if at all. Also, her spousal support would not be for more than two years. After that she'd be expected to support herself. If there was a house and savings, they would be split, and if the amount was substantial, she wouldn't get any spousal support at all. In addition, if she had been cheating on him with multiple partners, this type of behavior would be used against her in any legal proceedings, even in jurisdictions with no fault divorce laws. And finally, if the friend was a both his and her lawyer, he would not legally be allowed to represent her against him in any legal proceedings. Of course they always paint these divorce stories as all one sided to make the cheating wife's threats seem more realistic.

First mistake is getting drunk, instead of throwing her out on her ass.
When he was on the fishing trip, he could have tied each of them up to a tree and just left them there.
Finally he could have just ridden off into the sun set and left her on her own, she would have poisoned the children against him, so leaving the kids behind would have been no problem.

James is as stupid as nimble as a rock. The main characters are two very smart and powerful women, the men of course are a collection of stupids betraying the authors identity. The author just needs to reflect, put in a bit more effort on editing and review. Perhaps get a professional writer to check it over first. just a suggestion maybe you can learn to write believable characters. Also a little research will show your penalties legally the husband is threatened with are fantasy at best. Luckily his secretary solves James problems because James doesn't really do thinking.
